Service as action
Throughout Grade 7 and Grade 8, I completed approximately ten Service as Action activities, both within school and in the wider community. These experiences gave me opportunities to contribute in different ways while developing empathy, responsibility, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the people and communities around me.
During Grade 8, I participated in several initiatives, including the Food Bank Campaign, Empathy Week Teachers' Appreciation Breakfast, Empathy Mural, Bookmark Competition, and the Empathy Project with Field Trip and Food Basket. Each activity allowed me to contribute in a different way, from supporting people in need and showing appreciation to members of the school community, to using creativity to promote empathy and cultural understanding.
One of my most meaningful experiences was the Empathy Project. As part of the project, I participated in a field trip to a local community centre, where I interacted with elderly members of the community, listened to their experiences, and took part in activities designed to build connections across generations. We also explored people's different cultural backgrounds and origins, helping me understand how individual experiences, cultures, and identities shape the way people see the world. The project later included a Food Basket initiative, through which we worked together to collect and donate essential items to support the community.
Through these Service as Action experiences, I learned that meaningful service is not only about giving or volunteering. It is also about listening, understanding different perspectives, respecting cultural differences, collaborating with others, and recognising the needs of a community. These experiences have encouraged me to become more empathetic, open-minded, responsible, and aware of how even small actions can make a positive contribution.
