art & design

Art and Design are opportunities for me to express creativity while solving real-world problems. Throughout the IB MYP programme, I have developed projects that combine imagination, technical skills, and practical thinking—from visual artworks to functional product designs.

I enjoy turning ideas into reality through planning, experimentation, and continuous improvement. Every project has helped me become a more creative, independent, and reflective learner while strengthening both my artistic and design abilities.

Visual Arts

During MYP 3 (Grade 8), I completed two major Visual Arts projects.

For my first project, I studied the work of Wangechi Mutu, analysing her distinctive collage style, artistic themes, and mixed-media techniques. Inspired by her unique approach to storytelling through collage, I created my own original collage artwork, applying the artistic concepts I had researched while developing my own personal interpretation.

My second project focused on African patterns. After researching patterns from different African cultures, I chose to study Nigerian patterns in depth. By analysing traditional examples, I explored their symbolism, colour, and geometric structure before designing and producing my own original Nigerian-inspired pattern. These projects strengthened my research skills, artistic creativity, and ability to transform inspiration into original work.

Music

During MYP 3 (Grade 8), I collaborated with my classmates to create an original rap performance centred on the theme of protecting the Earth. Together, we planned the lyrics, rhythm, and overall performance, using music as a way to communicate an important global message. Throughout the project, I also became proficient in using BandLab to compose, arrange, edit, and produce music digitally. This experience strengthened my creativity, collaboration, communication, and digital music production skills while demonstrating how music can be used to inspire positive change.

Drama

During MYP 3 (Grade 8), I explored the concept of multimedia theatre, analysing how technology, sound, lighting, visuals, and live performance work together to enhance storytelling. Building on this research, my group created and performed our own adaptation of The Emperor's New Clothes. This project strengthened my confidence, teamwork, creativity, and presentation skills while giving me valuable experience in script development, performance, and theatrical production.

Design

Since MYP 2 (Grade 7), Design has been one of my favourite subjects because it combines creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. Through the IB MYP Design Cycle, I have learned how to transform ideas into practical solutions by following every stage of the design process, including research, planning, creating, testing, evaluating, and improving. To date, I have completed five major design projects.

Scratch Game – Ninja Adventure

My first design project was to create a game using Scratch. I designed and programmed a ninja-themed platform game, where players controlled a ninja character through different challenges and obstacles. Throughout this project, I learned the fundamentals of computational thinking, game mechanics, programming logic, and user interaction while developing my creativity through character and level design.

Nike Shoe Design

For my second project, I designed a pair of Nike-inspired shoes by combining the brand's identity with the visual characteristics of the giant panda. I explored colour theory, product aesthetics, and branding before producing my own concept design. This project strengthened my understanding of visual communication and how creative inspiration from nature can be incorporated into modern product design.

Study Caddy

My third project was the design and construction of a Study Caddy, a wooden desktop organiser designed to improve organisation and efficiency while studying. I researched user needs, produced sketches, created technical drawings using AutoCAD, and refined my design digitally with Adobe Illustrator. The final product featured mortise-and-tenon joints, combining structural strength with precision craftsmanship. This project significantly enhanced my skills in product design, technical drawing, woodworking, and iterative design.

Lisbon Brochure

My most recent project was designing a tri-fold brochure promoting Lisbon for Spanish tourists. I carefully considered the target audience, page layout, colour palette, typography, imagery, and information hierarchy to create an informative and visually engaging publication. Using digital design tools, I developed a brochure that balanced aesthetics with effective communication, further strengthening my graphic design, layout, and visual communication skills.

CodeAI – Sporting CP Information System

My fifth design project was developing a Sporting CP Information System using CodeAI. The program provides comprehensive information about the club, including its history, achievements, stadium, current squad with detailed player profiles, honours, president, and head coach. Throughout the project, I focused on organising information in a clear, structured, and interactive way while designing a user-friendly interface. This project strengthened my programming, interface design, computational thinking, and problem-solving skills, demonstrating how technology can be used to present information effectively and engage users.

Each of these projects has expanded my creativity, technical ability, and confidence as a designer. Together, they demonstrate my ability to combine research, innovation, and practical problem-solving to create thoughtful and purposeful designs.

Our principles shape the way we express our ideas through art and design.
